Aunque esta noci\u00f3n surgi\u00f3 del concepto de refugiado contenido en la Convenci\u00f3n sobre el Estatuto de los Refugiados de 1951 y su Protocolo de 1967, en la actualidad ha evolucionado para abarcar una categor\u00eda mucho m\u00e1s amplia de personas necesitadas. De esta evoluci\u00f3n dan fe una Opini\u00f3n Consultiva de 2014 de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CorteIDH) y la innovadora definici\u00f3n de 2017 proporcionada por el Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados (ACNUR). Although this notion grew out of the concept of refugee contained in the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol, it has now evolved to encompass a much broader category of persons in need. This evolution is attested to by a 2014 Advisory Opinion of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) and the groundbreaking 2017 definition provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
