Refugee law and international protection are broad and complex topics. It is possible to spend an entire semester investigating just one narrow part of them. The authors have written this manual with the instructor in mind. It is not intended as a textbook for students, nor is it a work of original research for scholars. The RELATE Manual aims to organise a broader subject into one coherent course. It offers summaries aimed at a law instructor who may not already be an expert in refugee law. And it offers lists of additional references that an instructor can provide students with or use to expand their knowledge.

In organising a course on international refugee law, our goal is to present this topic in a manner applicable anywhere in the world. However, we encourage instructors to customise the course by increasing attention to topics that are especially relevant where and when the course is offered.

Refugee law and international protection are urgent topics constantly in the news. They are also timeless topics. We encourage teachers to bring current events into the classroom. We hope this Manual helps introduce the main ideas, problems, complexity and debate of refugee law and international protection. But we hope students and instructors also understand that refugee law and international protection are ongoing challenges. It is essential that legal professionals learn the rules of law but also learn to deal with the challenges involved.
